Connection

How can I experience connection?
A young girl asked inquisitively.
I smiled and hugged her closely;
Sung softly what life had revealed to me:

You can know bliss from a delicious dish.
You can know passion from a breathless kiss.
But you can’t know connection until you wish
To tell the truth and tell it quick.

You can know joy from a friend’s guffaw.
You can know peace from an insight born.
But you can’t know connection until you’re called
To tell the truth and tell it all.

You can know sweetness from a stranger’s smile.
You can know beauty from a writer’s rhyme.
But you can’t know connection until you strive
To tell the truth and tell it wise.

You can know care from a mother’s cry.
You can know tenderness from time to time.
But you can’t know connection until you try
To tell the truth and tell it kind.

How can I experience connection?
A young girl asked inquisitively.
I smiled and hugged her closely;
Sung softly what life had revealed to me:

Acknowledge thoughts and feelings,
Out what’s in your heart,
For it’s not the truth but secrets kept
That tears connection apart.

Question ‘truths’ with laughter:
What’s real and what is token?
And you’ll experience true connection,
With yourself and with those who are open.
