'Natural' as Defence
The word 'natural' is frequently used by the ego as a defence. When behaviour is labelled 'natural', it becomes protected from inquiry. The mind subtly implies that what is natural should not be questioned, changed or examined.
Everything is natural in the sense that it exists. It is the nature of awareness to be, as it is the nature of the ego to defend its patterns and preserve continuity.
When/if the phrase 'it’s only natural' arises in thought or conversation, notice what is being protected. The label is often shielding a behaviour from being seen clearly. When the defence is recognised, behaviour can be observed without judgement or justification. From observation, transformation becomes possible.
